Description

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to business concepts that will allow them to take leadership roles in providing quality cost-effective care. Students study basic concepts of health economics including supply and demand, economic optimization, the competitive model, scarcity and marketplace behavior. They apply these concepts to the current health care market and analyze the impact on the roles of nursing and other health care professionals. They learn the process of budget development and cost/benefit analysis. The organization of the health care system is discussed in terms of public/private; for profit/not for profit; population based/agency based. Financing is discussed in terms of: prospective/retrospective; assistance/insurance; and government/private. Advanced practice nursing roles related to cost and quality (resource management, risk assessment and management, and quality improvement) are introduced.
